Smoke alarms: Make them work for youTM

October 6 to 12 is Fire Prevention Week. Working smoke alarms save lives! Smoke alarms sense smoke well before you can, alerting you to danger. They are the first line of defence in a home fire.

Here are three key guidelines to make sure your smoke alarm is working for you!

  1. Install - Smoke alarms need to be in every bedroom, outside of the sleeping areas (like a hallway) and on each level (including the basement) of your home.

  1. Test - Test all smoke alarms monthly with smoke.

  1. Replace - Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years.

For the best protection, use combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms that are interconnected throughout the home. These can be installed by a qualified electrician, so that when one sounds, they all sound. This ensures you can hear the alarm no matter where in your home the alarm originates.

Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members in your home including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
