Important changes coming to On-demand Transit
Starting May 20
- Transit will be increasing service to On-demand Transit during peak travel times including, but not limited to mid-evening and on Saturdays in the morning and mid-afternoon.
- The intention behind this additional service is to reduce some of the challenges customers have been experiencing when booking day-of trips.
Starting June 2
- On-demand will truly become on-demand - All trips will be available for booking within 30 minutes of your desired travel time. Pre-booking of trips will no longer be available.
- May 28 will be the final day that pre-booking 5 days in advance will be available.
- As of this date Strathcona County On-demand transit will truly become an on demand system with all rides being made available 30 minutes prior to a rider’s desired trip time.
- By making this change to 30-minute prior bookings, it should reduce the number of "no shows" trips that are currently blocking the system preventing day-of riders from booking a trip, and it will also make access to trips more equitable for all riders.
Use the on-demand app to plan and book your trip all at once to ensure you make your connections!
When taking a trip that will have you riding more than one bus anywhere in the Edmonton Capital Region, make sure you include your complete trip in the app. Doing so will ensure that you will make your connections between service types and service providers. Here's how:
- Enter your starting location under "My Location" and your final destination under "My Destination"
- The trip planner will give you a complete trip including all the different routes you will need to take. If there is an on-demand portion of the trip, it will give you the opportunity to book that on-demand trip.
- The entire trip plan will be saved in your app for you to access on the day travel, and it the system will ensure that your on-demand trip connects with your commuter trips to allow you to continue on to your final destination.
Accuracy counts when booking for multiple people
Now that Transit is using the smaller 25' buses there is limited capacity for people on theses buses and standing is not allowed. When booking your trip, please ensure you are booking for the correct number of passengers to ensure that everyone can get on the bus, that your trip does not need to be rebooked, and you aren't left waiting on the curb.

On Saturday and Sunday, you can also call 780-464-RIDE (7433) between 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. to book within 30 minutes of your desired travel time.
Starting June 2, all travel will be truly on-demand, and there will no longer be an option to pre-book trips. This change is being made to reduce the number of "no shows" - rides that are booked, but not taken, booked and not taken, that are currently taking up ride inventory out of the system and preventing other riders from using those trips. By making this change Transit will also be making access to rides more fair, by giving everyone access to the same number of trips on a first-come, first-served basis.

- local one-way cash fare: $3.25
- commuter one-way cash fare is $6.50
Make sure you ask for a transfer if you are travelling to downtown Edmonton.
Payment
You will need to pay when you ride your bus. In-app payment is not available.
Timing your trips
When booking advanced trips:
Arrive by
If you need to be somewhere at a specific time, specify “Arrive by” when scheduling your trip. Watch the pick-up time notifications for any changes.
Depart at
Use “Depart at” when you know the time you want to leave but have more flexibility with arrival time. With these options, arrival times could change depending on demand.
Pick-up Time
You will receive a pick-up window and an estimated time of arrival. Please always be at the stop before the pick-up window. The bus could arrive with that window, and it can’t wait.
Travelling time to Edmonton
- When booking a trip to catch either the Route 411 or 414 at Bethel to go to Edmonton, book an "Arrive by" trip 10-15 minutes (:00 or :05) prior to your bus departing to ensure you arrive in time to catch the departing bus.
Coming home to Sherwood Park
- When booking your local Sherwood Park trip for the arriving Route 411 or 414 (ten minutes after the hour), we recommend booking your local bus approximately between the :20 and :30 after the hour, using the “Depart At” setting. This allows for traffic delays to make your on-demand connection.
- If you are riding the final 411 from Edmonton to Sherwood Park at the end of the night, there is no need to book your trip home. There will be an on-demand bus waiting at the Bethel Transit Terminal ready to take you home.
Using the app as a trip planner
Plan a trip anywhere in the Edmonton Capital Region. Enter your destination in the app, see the best options by bus, On Demand or a combination of the two, and take the trip that's best for you. If on-demand is part of your trip, the app will let you book the on-demand trip that best connects with your conventional trip. You can also plan trips across the region that fall outside of on-demand hours. Just enter your starting point and end destination and the app will help you find your most efficient route!

Accessibility features
40' Buses
- These buses have ramps and two designated secure mobility device locations. If you need one of these spots, please make sure you note it on your trip request to ensure we have one reserved for you.
25' buses
- Theses buses have lifts s designed to be used for passengers with mobility limitations, including individuals who have trouble with the stairs, and those who have mobility aids such as wheelchairs mobility scooters or walkers. Operators will ride the lift with passengers who require the use of the lift.
-
Passengers in a mobility scooter must transfer from their scooter to a seat and be seat-belted in. If the passenger cannot do this themselves, then a care attendant must accompany the passenger (mandatory attendants for this purpose ride free). Passengers will be made aware of this at the time of booking. If no care attendant is with the passenger at the time of boarding, then they will need to rebook their ride.
-
Strollers can be loaded/unloaded using the lift. Children who are secured in the stroller can use the lift with their parents/caregivers at their side. It is preferred that strollers are folded and carried onto the bus if they are empty.
-
All of the above mobility aides, and strollers, must be mentioned at time of booking your trip and secured in the allotted securements on board the bus. Operators are provided additional time within their schedule to accommodate for the loading and unloading of these items to help keep on-demand running on schedule.
Bicycles
Both types of buses have bike racks. You must be able to place and remove your own bike onto the rack. The Operator is not allowed to get off the bus to help you with this.
Pets
Service animals are always welcome, as required by law.
Small pets in a secure carrier or cage that travels on the owner's lap are allowed on the bus. However, larger carriers that take up a seat or block the aisle, are not allowed.
Bus types
Starting in 2024 you may see two different types of buses on your on-demand trip: the standard 40' nova buses, or the 25' accessible buses currently branded "Mobility Bus". If one of these smaller buses comes up to your stop, watch for the pink sign in the window to the right of the door. It will indicate that that bus in in fact being used as a on-demand bus. These buses are 100% accessible for your mobility needs.
Safety and accessibility
General safety aboard on-demand
When riding the 25' buses, all riders are required to wear seatbelts. There are also 1 or 2 built-in safety seats for children, and mobility devices can be secured to the floor. All buses have are equipped with surveillance cameras and follow the same 'Safe Bus' protocols as our 40' buses in the evenings providing you the opportunity to request an alternate stop closer to your desired destination.
Child safety on-board
The On Demand Transit 25' buses are designed for passengers of all ages.
- You can bring a child in a stroller onto the bus, but they may not remain in seated in the stroller once the bus is in motion.
- There is space on board for multiple strollers, they must be folded down and stowed away appropriately.
- You must bring your own infant safety carrier for those children who weigh less than 20 pounds or 9 kilograms.
- Bucket style infant carriers should be buckled into the seat belt provided.
- Wagons are not allowed on buses as the wheels do not lock and can be a safety issue. If you have a collapsable wagon, you may bring it on board, but it must be collapsed and stowed.

The instructional video below will help you use these simple seats.
