Elk Island National Park of Canada
The Park is open year round and is located 35 km east of Edmonton on highway #16. It is home to herds of free roaming bison, moose, deer and elk. Elk Island National Park is a bird watchers’ paradise with over 250 species of birds. Be it nature viewing, canoeing, hiking, cross-country skiing, picnicking, golfing or camping, there is something for everyone!

Strathcona County’s interactive hands-on museum invites visitors of all ages to interact with the artefacts in the displays. Anyone interested in local history and heritage can call to pre-book tours guided by costumed interpreters who share the history of the exhibits and artefacts. Customized group tours are available for schools, seniors, clubs and organizations.

This 500 seat Elizabethan-style performance theatre is a vibrant, multi-use centre for the arts. It is a point of convergence for the cultural visions, ideas and energies of Strathcona County. Each year over 100 professional performances including blues, Celtic, comedy, folk and live theatre are performed at Festival Place.
Millennium Place is a multi functional facility where all ages can enjoy leisure, recreation and fitness activities including swimming, skating, fitness, sports, children’s play opportunities and more. The facility houses a special event centre and field house, fitness centre, indoor track gymnasium for drop-in sports, climbing wall, twin arena, children’s playground and leisure ice to enjoy year-round.
Strathcona Wilderness Centre
Only 20 minutes east of Sherwood Park on Township Rd. 530 (Baseline Road) and Range Road 212
This popular hiking and cross-country skiing spot features 550 acres of natural serenity and 12 km of trails. Discover nature on a fun filled day trip or register for summer day camps. Book the centre’s bunkhouses and modern pine lodge for family and corporate retreats. The Centre is also open for cross-county skiing & snowshoeing.
Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area
This recreational area is only 45 minutes east of Edmonton and offers more than 170 kilometers of trails. Take in a relaxing trail or challenge yourself in more difficult terrain, al the while enjoying the area’s scenic forests, pastures and wetlands. This 97-square kilometre site is a ‘Day-use only’ recreational area and is a horseback rider’s paradise offering more than 85 kilometers of equestrian trails. Delight in the area’s diverse wildlife – beaver, snowshoe hare, moose, elk and deer are common, as are a wide variety of birds such as grouse, great blue heron and the “at risk” trumpeter swan. There are four staging areas: Waskehegan, Islet Lake, Central and Blackfoot. Have plenty of parking as well as picnic shelters and privies. Trails are equiped with covered rest stops and heated shelters. Study your maps and come prepared with extra gear such as dry clothing, food and a flashlight.
