A group of seniors sitting in two rows of shares excitedly raising their hands in the air, participating in an exercise class.

This story was provided by Heartland Housing Foundation to share the positive impact of housing affordability initiatives in our community.

As I got older, everything about my home started to feel too difficult. Things that were easy before, like making my meals or vacuuming the stairs, were so hard that sometimes I just couldn’t do them at all.

I was afraid that because I only had the government pensions that I would never be able to afford any kind of life where could still be independent but not have to worry about so many things. I was worried that even though I needed a little help, I couldn’t afford the expensive seniors’ homes that included things like meals and activities, and that I’d have to wait until things got so bad I’d need a nursing home.

When I found out about the lodges and the subsidies offered, I applied and after a bit of a wait, I got into Clover Bar Lodge. Even with my low income, I still get 3 meals a day cooked by a chef, we have activities every day, and I have made so many friends. I feel hopeful now, not anxious, about growing older now that I have a safe home.
