This story was provided by Hope in Strathcona to share the positive impact of housing affordability initiatives in our community.

Justin's story is one of resilience and transformation. With 11.5 years of sobriety under his belt, Justin has experienced the harsh realities of homelessness and addiction. For 12 years, he battled substance abuse, often finding himself without a place to call home.

Today, he channels his energy into creative outlets like painting, charcoal abstract art, and writing music. A fitness enthusiast, Justin also cherishes the time he spends with his son, teaching him to play soccer, skateboard, and embark on adventures together. "Life is good on this side," Justin says, "my worst day sober will always be better than my best day in active addiction."

Justin is the Manager of Operations for Hope in Strathcona, a safe and supportive sober living residence program for men (Hope House) and an outreach program for individuals suffering from addiction. Organizations like Hope in Strathcona are vital to the community. They provide essential support and services for those seeking sobriety, reuniting families, and helping individuals reach their potential, free from addiction.

"We are part of the solution," Justin emphasizes. Hope in Strathcona boasts a success rate of over 50% of residents achieving sobriety for over a year. This remarkable achievement underscores the organization's impact and the importance of its work. However, Justin wishes more people knew about the urgent need for more beds. "We need more beds so we can extend our help to more individuals," he says, "leading to more families made whole again and more lives saved in the national addiction crisis."

Justin's journey and his work with Hope in Strathcona highlight the profound impact of housing affordability initiatives and addiction recovery programs. By providing a safe and supportive environment, Hope in Strathcona helps individuals rebuild their lives, fostering a stronger, healthier community. Through their efforts, they bring hope and stability to those who need it most, proving that with the right support, recovery and a better life are possible.
