An father and mother sit with their three children on their lap, an infant girl and two adolescent boys, on a picnic blanket outside surrounded by green grass.

This story was provided by Habitat for Humanity Edmonton to share the positive impact of housing affordability initiatives in our community.

Liyu always dreamed of providing her family with a stable and comfortable home, but for years, that dream felt out of reach. She and her husband worked hard to support their three children, yet the challenges of renting made it difficult to build the future they wanted. Their apartment was too small, and Liyu struggled with allergies that were aggravated by the carpeted floors she couldn’t fully clean. While a small greenspace sat behind their building, it wasn’t a safe option for her youngest son, who is on the autism spectrum and needed close supervision.

Finding a new place seemed impossible. With her husband’s commission-based income, saving for a down payment wasn’t realistic. Despite searching extensively, every affordable option was either too small or in poor condition, leaving them stuck in the rent cycle.

That changed when Liyu learned about Habitat for Humanity Edmonton’s affordable home ownership program. Though her first application was unsuccessful, she remained determined. When she applied again, she was accepted. Just days later, she was calling her husband with the incredible news.

Moving into their new home was life-changing. Liyu’s children finally had the space they needed to thrive. Her daughter now spends her free time reading and making art, and her son, once hesitant to invite friends over, has gained confidence and independence in his own room. The whole family enjoys their spacious backyard, where Liyu can safely watch her children play from the kitchen window. The biggest change for her, however, is the sense of stability and pride that homeownership has brought. With a space she can truly call her own, she finally feels at peace.

For Liyu, home ownership isn’t just about having a house. It’s about security, confidence, and a better future for her family. She encourages anyone looking for a path to affordable home ownership to explore their options, just as she did.
