Job Description

This posting is for 1 temporary full-time position up to 18 months

The Accountant for the Fleet and Facility Management department will assist with the development and monitoring of annual operating and capital budgets, carry out the day-to-day financial administration, routine reporting requests, as well as support and coverage for the Fleet and Facility Services Accountants.


This role may be eligible to participate in our hybrid work program.  The successful candidate will be required to reside within 2 hours of Sherwood Park, Alberta. 


Responsibilities:


  • Assist in the coordination, planning and scheduling of events in relation to the Municipal budget process by reviewing budget information (historical and current data) and liaising with staff to meet deadlines and comply with approved policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Monitor, reconcile and analyze year-to-date financial information relating to the operating budget and provide monthly variance reports to the department and Corporate Financial Planning
  • Assist with department and financial reporting needs by compiling and updating various ad hoc reports 
  • Reconcile and update various GL accounts by creating and submitting journal entries
  • Compile year end accruals and budget carryover requests
  • Assist Accountant(s) with capital asset reporting
  • Create and update monthly project financial reports
  • Liaise with staff to determine asset allocations within projects
  • Provide advice and guidance to department purchasing card holders to ensure that all transactions are properly uploaded, explained and classified
  • Monitor account holder adherence to purchasing card policies and procedures
  • Provide annual and 4-year budget forecast to departments and Corporate Financial Planning for all electricity and natural gas sites
  • Perform day-to-day accounting tasks


Qualifications and Skills:


  • Post Secondary Diploma or Degree in accounting or a related field
  • 3 years related experience in an accounting position with a focus on facility management with both operating and capital accounting activities
  • Proficient in various computer applications such as Oracle and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Demonstrated analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with others, both verbally and in writing
  • Strong time management skills and an ability to prioritize workloads in a fast paced environment through staying organized and multi-tasking effectively
  • Ability to recognize and discreetly handle confidential matters; this includes staff information and personal details, department details and organization details via hard copy, electronically and verbally (FOIP)
  • Ability to apply accounting principles and concepts of the Municipal Government Act, the Public Sector Accounting Board, and County Financial policies, to comply with internal and external audit requirement
