Job Description

Public Works Labourer’s will assist the Transportation Engineering and Operations department with winter operations during the 2024/2025 winter maintenance season (November to March).


Responsibilities:


  • Assists in the construction and repair of roads, fences, signs, sidewalks, retaining walls (includes brush removal, piling, painting, and other related duties)
  • Operate ½ ton and 1-ton trucks; may be required to transport tools and equipment using small trailer
  • Operate hand and/or power tools and light equipment
  • Perform duties of a flag person to direct traffic through work/construction sites
  • Load and unload materials and equipment from trucks
  • Complete routine site, shop and vehicle clean-up
  • Clean and maintain tools and equipment to ensure ongoing efficient and effective operation; perform minor repairs during operation and report the need for major repairs or maintenance to supervisor
  • Maintain on-site communication with work crew members and good public relations with the general public, suppliers and other departments
  • Undertake work in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) legislation and County policies, standards, and procedures
  • Attend daily safety meetings to gain knowledge of standard operating procedures and safe work plans; may participate in hazard assessments and incident reporting, as required
  • Carry out written or oral instructions and maintain records/work reports of assigned tasks
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others in a team environment


Qualifications and Skills:


  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Related work experience in a municipal environment would be an asset
  • Ability to work with hand and/or power tools and light motor vehicles
  • Basic knowledge of OH&S regulations, safe work practices, and precautions (use of personal protection, safety equipment, resources, and hazard awareness)
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and demonstrate leadership skills; capacity to provide and follow direction
  • Capable of carrying out both verbal and written instruction; ability to maintain concentration and mental alertness for extended periods of time
  • Basic computer skills and mobile device literacy


Conditions of Employment


  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits 
  • Shift work is required – this position works a rotating 12-hour shift of days and nights (7 days on/7 days off)
  • Ability to work in remote rural areas and in all weather conditions (including adverse weather)
  • Ability to perform physical labour which includes moderate to heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds), standing, bending, shoveling, etc.
