Job Description

Recreation, Parks and Culture is looking to hire for the 2025 season!


 


This posting is for multiple, non-permanent hourly seasonal labourer and equipment operator positions ranging from 16 to 36 weeks in duration. Positions have start dates ranging from March to May 2025.


 


Labourer I & II – $22.65 – $28.43


 


Labourer positions contribute to the conservation of municipal land, and the maintenance and improvement of outdoor recreational opportunities through the performance of manual labour and tasks.   


 


Labourers support the Broadmoor Public Golf Course, Mowing and Waste Diversion, Landscaping and Events, Outdoor Premier Areas, Horticulture and Urban Forestry, Park Development Construction, Maintenance and Inspections as well as Wildlife and Invasive Plant Control programs within Strathcona County.  


 


Equipment Operator I & II – $30.34 – $35.64


 


Equipment Operators contribute to the maintenance and improvement of outdoor recreational areas by safely operating a variety of self-propelled small equipment, performing manual labour and training other staff in the safe operation of equipment.


Equipment Operators perform work in areas such as: Broadmoor Public Golf Course, Mowing and Waste Diversion, Landscaping and Events, Outdoor Premier Areas, Horticulture and Urban Forestry, Park Development Construction, Maintenance and Inspections as well as Weed Control within Strathcona County. 

 


Opportunities for the following teams:


 


Broadmoor Public Golf Course


  • Strathcona County’s Broadmoor Golf Course is responsible for Maintenance and the use of specialized equipment for golf turf areas including rough, fairway, tee, and greens areas. 
  • Landscaping and beautification, Golf course set up, Special Events, and Weed Control.
  • Applicants for Operator positions at BPGC must have or be willing to obtain a Q-endorsement (Operator 1 & 2) and Pesticide Applicators License (Operator 2 only).


 


Landscaping and Events 


  • Explore a dynamic role as a Landscape and Events Laborer or Operator. We are responsible for the seamless management of special events, comprehensive landscaping projects, cultural practices on sport fields, precise weed control, meticulous bike park grooming, expert ball diamond maintenance and proactive aggregate trail upkeep. Join us in creating vibrant outdoor spaces that enhance the community enjoyment and well-being. 


 


Mowing and Waste Diversion 


  • The Mowing & Waste Diversion team is responsible for a variety of mowing and waste diversion duties throughout Sherwood Park and rural Strathcona County.
  • Mowing & trimming parks, trails, boulevards and green spaces. 
  • Servicing waste receptacles, recycling bins and organics carts. 
  • Inspection and disposal of unauthorized use scenarios along with litter and waste cleanup of RPC spaces. 
  • Partake in special events and projects such as Canada Day festival & clean up.


 


 


Outdoor Premier Areas and Skating  


  • Our Outdoor Premier Areas and Skating team is responsible for maintenance on all Class A Irrigated and artificial turf fields and diamonds 
  • Maintenance of track and field equipment and amenities 
  • Picnic Shelter and Gazebo bookings at Broadmoor Lake Park, Centennial Park and Smeltzer House
  • Host and support events such as music festivals, sports tournaments, etc.


 


Park Development


  • Park Development is responsible for the construction, maintenance and inspection of outdoor recreational infrastructure, amenities, and assets which include playgrounds, outdoor fitness equipment, spray parks, tennis/pickleball courts, BMX bike skills park, skate parks, outdoor hockey rinks, ball diamonds, basketball courts etc. 
  • Park Development also supports outdoor special events, perform graffiti removal, fence painting, sand top ups and more!


 


Urban Forestry and Horticulture 


  • The Horticulture department maintains and revitalizes ornamental landscaped areas within Strathcona County. We care for shrubs, flower beds and flower planters, including planting, weeding, mulching, pruning, watering and spring clean-up. Join this supportive and outgoing team for a rewarding seasonal job.
  • Experience with the use of hand tools such as secateurs, loppers, trowels, hand saws, shovels, rakes, rototillers, backpack blowers would be considered an asset but not required.
  • The Urban Forestry team is responsible for the maintenance of County owned trees on boulevards and in parks. This includes pruning, dead and hazard tree removals, stump grinding, and watering.
  • Experience with tools and equipment such as secateurs, loppers, hand saws, chippers, and stump grinders would be considered an asset.


 


Qualifications & Skills:


  • Experience using a variety of equipment and hand/power tools
  • Previous experience as a labourer or in landscaping, construction, forestry, greenhouse, playground, golf course, agricultural, or irrigation practices would be considered an asset
  • For equipment operators, previous experience operating, servicing, and maintaining trucks, trailers, ride-on mowers, tractors, skid steers and/or small equipment 


 


Conditions of Employment:


  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits 
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification required prior to start date
  • Ability and willingness to perform various types of physical labour including moderate to heavy lifting (up to 23 kilograms), standing, bending, shoveling, etc.
  • Ability and willingness to perform duties in inclement and adverse weather conditions
  • Ability to work full-time hours within a variety of shifts
