Job Description

This posting is for 1 temporary full-time position up to 18 months


The Outdoor Recreation Community Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the coordination and implementation of Strathcona County events and specialized programs. This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing high-profile Strathcona County events and specialized programs. This position liaises with community stakeholders to ensure event and sport tourism initiatives are executed successfully, address community needs and align with Strathcona County’s strategic objectives. 


Responsibilities:


  • Develop, plan, manage and evaluate events for outdoor services and Strathcona County Sport Tourism Initiatives 
  • Coordinate meaningful public experiences through the planning, coordinating and programming of highly recognized major events for Strathcona County such as Canada Day, New Year’s Eve, Celebration of Lights and Arbor Day 
  • Act as team lead for major community, regional and provincial events hosted in Strathcona County 
  • Overseeing internal staff and external community members/boards including multiple departments, stakeholders, community groups and community partner events 
  • Collaborate with event partners, various levels of government, non-governmental organizations, community groups and businesses to provide expertise, in addition to developing and coordinating community event and regional cooperation strategies that ensure Strathcona County’s strategic objectives are fulfilled 
  • Build, support and coordinate new partnership opportunities for outdoor community services 
  • Initiate and coordinate value in kind partnerships for community events, programs and outdoor amenities to generate positive public relations and support the Sport Tourism and Recreation and Culture Strategy 
  • Responsible for grant management, identifying available grants, writing and submitting applications following government protocol and coordinating final reporting 
  • Conduct ongoing research of trends, innovative services and products to improve Recreation Parks and Culture events, outdoor facilities and services 
  • Coordinate the department’s Sport Tourism Strategy to facilitate and evaluate programs and services for external and internal groups 
  • Coordinate and Supervise event contractors, volunteers and staff


Qualifications and Skills:


  • Post-secondary education in Recreation Administration, Physical Education, Business or related area 
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in leadership capacity within event planning, facilities, community development, policy development and public engagement 
  • Flexibility in work schedule to manage events outside of business hours 
  • Strong understanding of all aspects of events coordination, sponsorship, marketing and communication functions  
  • In-depth knowledge of community recreation programs, services, and events 
  • Community development, strategic planning and team management skills 
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills including ability to make decisions, negotiate and interpret information from diverse sources 
  • Excellent Organizational skills, ability to set goals and work priorities, manage diverse projects and duties simultaneously while meeting timelines 
  • Exceptional Communication and Interpersonal skills both verbal and written 
  • Sound judgment and critical thinking skills and effective change management 
  • Ability to work independently, as well with in a cross functional team 
  • Political acumen is an asset 


Conditions of Employment:


  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
