Job Description

This posting is for 1 permanent part-time position


The Assistant Recreation Programmer (ARP) provides coordination of outdoor recreation programs and community events, and ensure all program areas and equipment are maintained to the highest level and provide quality service to our clientele. The ARP collaborates with organizations, agencies, and individuals on a specific program or event basis and provides input into future program development at the Strathcona Wilderness Centre. Typical work shifts may include days, evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays, with increased hours during the summer months. 


Key Responsibilities: 


  • Program coordination and collaboration with organizations, agencies, and individuals for outdoor education programs, community events, and day camps.
  • Schedule program staff, volunteers and facilities for programs, courses, and events.
  • Provide day to day supervision, ongoing feedback, mentorship, and leadership to Instructors, and volunteers.  
  • Along with the Recreation Programmer, support and develop training and internal processes/procedures for program staff and volunteers. 
  • Oversee program spaces and program equipment in coordination with site operations teams, other facilities, and parks to facilitate program and event site usage 
  • Perform as part of the Recreation Programming Team to provide supervision, leadership, and guest services problem solving 
  • Assist the Outdoor Recreation Programmer with recruitment, staff development, projects, and other duties as required 
  • Actively engage with program and facility guests while providing excellent customer service 
  • Assist with surveys and feedback collection, guest retention strategies, and orientation programs 


Qualifications and Skills:


  • Minimum high school education with 4 years of related experience
  • In the process of obtaining, or have completed post-secondary education in physical education, recreation, tourism, or a related field, or a combination of education and experience is considered an asset
  • Minimum of two years program coordination experience, along with recreation-related supervisory/leadership experience, including staff supervision, to ensure effective team management and a positive work environment
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and team-building skills, with proven ability to maintain high standards of safety, & quality
  • Strong team player with the ability to collaborate effectively in a dynamic work environment
  • Ability to work independently, and on a variety of teams in a variety of environments 
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills taking a balanced approach that supports team dynamics and business priorities
  • Demonstrate subject matter expertise in programming related to outdoor skills, adventure education, and/or environmental education 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and scheduling software, and knowledge of safe work practices 
  • The following certifications are an asset to the position: 
    • Minimum 40-hour Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA
    • CANSI I (Classic only) Instructor and NCCP Community Coaching (cross country skiing) 
    • Paddle Canada Lake Instructor/Waterfront Instructor


Conditions of Employment:


  • Current Intermediate First Aid/CPR & WHIMIS
  • Submission of a Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Valid Alberta Class 4 Driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
