Job Description

This posting is for multiple seasonal full-time positions for up to 4 months (May to August).


Public Works Labourers will assist the Transportation Engineering and Operations department during the 2025 summer season.


Responsibilities:


  • Assist in the construction and repair of roads, fences, signs, sidewalks, retaining walls, etc. (includes brush removal, piling, painting, and other related duties)
  • Operate hand and/or power tools and light equipment
  • Perform flag person duties to direct traffic through work or construction sites
  • Load and unload materials and equipment from trucks
  • Complete routine site, shop and vehicle clean-up
  • Clean and maintain tools and equipment to ensure ongoing efficient and effective operation; perform minor repairs during operation and report the need for major repairs or maintenance to supervisor
  • Operate ½ ton and 1-ton trucks; may be required to transport tools and equipment using small trailers
  • Maintain on-site communication with work crew members and good public relations with the general public, suppliers and other departments
  • Attend daily safety meetings to gain knowledge of standard operating procedures and safe work plans; may participate in hazard assessments and incident reporting, as required
  • Carry out written or oral instructions and maintain records/work reports of assigned tasks
  • Undertake work in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) legislation and County policies, standards, and procedures
  • May be required to train, lead and oversee the work of lower-level Labourers on performing safe and effective operations, as assigned.


Qualifications and Skills:


  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Some related work experience is required; previous construction and municipal experience is preferred
  • Experience operating and servicing hand and/or power tools and light motor vehicles is an asset
  • Basic knowledge of OH&S regulations, safe work practices, and precautions (including the use of personal protection, safety equipment, resources, and hazard awareness)
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others in a team environment
  • Ability to communicate and interact in a positive manner with supervisors, co-workers, and residents
  • Able to follow written and verbal directions, and to maintain concentration and mental alertness for extended periods of time
  • Possess basic computer skills and mobile device literacy
  • Willingness and ability to work in inclement weather and remote rural areas


Conditions of Employment


  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits  
  • Ability and willingness to perform various types of physical labour including moderate to heavy lifting (up to 50lbs), standing, bending, shoveling, etc.
  • Working outside in inclement weather
