Strathcona County Emergency Services are honoured to serve and inspired to lead. As a fully integrated service, our members serve the community as both firefighters and paramedics. Emergency responders provide safe and courteous Fire/Rescue and Emergency Medical Services to the community of Strathcona County and surrounding areas as well as supporting and implementing initiatives that promote the department mission, vision and values. Key Responsibilities: 


  • Firefighter/Paramedics are assigned to the ambulance or a fire apparatus on a rotating basis
  • Duties are completed as assigned to support the implementation of effective, efficient and ethical procedures to meet the customer service, safety goals and objectives of the department
  • Safely respond and work at emergency and non-emergency scenes within established guidelines
  • Participate in training programs, exercises and career development as necessary
  • Perform routine duties related to facilities and equipment maintenance 
  • Complete required reporting and administration functions 
  • Participate in special projects or tasks which support and promote the department mission, vision and values 


Qualifications and Skills: 


  • Registration with the Alberta College of Paramedics as either an Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) or a Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) is a requirement upon application  
  • Successful completion of the University of Alberta (U of A) Firefighter Physical Fitness test at the time of your application is considered an asset*
  • NFPA 1001 Level I & II is an asset. Successful candidates will receive training for NFPA 1001’s 
  • Emergency medical/fire response work experience along with current ITLS, PALS, ACLS certification is considered an asset 
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, building and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Broad knowledge of fire rescue, EMS, mechanical equipment and building construction awareness
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions
  • Fosters team cooperation, supports group problem solving and ensures progress toward goals
  • Adaptability to changes in the work environment to best fit the situation or event
  • Capacity to acquire and maintain new knowledge and competencies, striving to continuously build skills
  • Mechanical aptitude, with agility and strength to perform prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions
  • Commitment to physical fitness and mental health


Conditions of Employment: 


  • Submission of a Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check   
  • Minimum of a valid Alberta Class 4 driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with  less than 7 demerits
    • Valid Alberta Class 3 driver’s licence and Air Brake (Q) endorsement must be completed before the end of the probationary year. Onus and cost is the candidates responsibility
  • Ability to pass all physical and medical standards as outlined in the NFPA
  • *Successfully pass the U of A Firefighter Physical Fitness test. You are encouraged to register for Open Testing at University of Alberta Firefighter Fitness TestingWe will accept successful results from the U of A that was conducted after January 1, 2025. Please note, any candidate selected to move through the recruitment process who has not yet completed the fitness test will be required to complete it by May 2025 


Shortlisted candidates will be required to complete pre-employment physical and knowledge assessments as well as provide proof of certifications and professional credentials as noted in the resume.


Out of province applicants must be fully registered with the Alberta College of Paramedics.  


Strathcona County may recognize IAFF members experience or experience from organizations that deliver similar services to determine appropriate classification and wage placement.
