Job Description
The Child & Youth Programs Summer Camp Instructor I will be responsible for assisting the Child & Youth Programs Summer Camp Instructor II with the implementation of age-appropriate, themed Child & youth recreational camps. Ensuring the development and safety of participants, Instructor I will support Instructor II in leading activities designed to increase children’s emotional and social development, creativity and fundamental movement skills. This will be achieved through a variety of structured and non-structured recreational activities that take place in a variety of environments.
The Child & Youth Programs Summer Camp Instructor II will be responsible for the overall planning and delivery of Child & Youth Programs Summer Camps. The instructor II will plan and implement age-appropriate themed Child & youth recreational camps as well as ensure programs are designed to increase children’s emotional and social development, creativity and fundamental movement skills. This will be achieved through a variety of structured and non-structured recreational activities that take place in a variety of environments. Child & Youth Programs Summer Camp Instructor II will provide leadership and guidance to Instructor I’s as well as Leaders in Training participants to create a cohesive team environment.
Description
This posting is for two different positions: Child & Youth Instructor I and Child & Youth Instructor II. We are seeking up to 7 Child & Youth Instructors I’s and 5 Child & Youth Instructor II’s.
These positions are seasonal starting in June with an expected end date of August 29, 2025.
Key Responsibilities:
Instructor I
- Deliver high quality summer recreation programs and camps
- Support the development of age-appropriate program plans
- Incorporate fundamental movement skills into program planning
- Provide participants with the opportunity to engage in a balance of high energy (ie. sports) and quiet activities (ie. crafts)
- Ensure proper policies and procedures are followed
- Collaborate and positively interact within a team environment
- Provide leadership and mentorship to Leaders in Training summer participants
- Model behaviors, supervise participants and adapt teaching style, in order to provide a positive environment
- Participate in various training opportunities and meetings for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving skills and knowledge
Instructor II (In addition to responsibilities for Instructor I)
- Overall leadership and responsibility of instructors, leaders in training and participants within designated camp
- Lead role in creating, coordinating instructor ideas and submitting program plans along with supply lists
- Responsible for pick-up and drop-off of camp equipment and paperwork
- Overall safety of participants and ensure proper policies and procedures are followed
- Ensure participants and parents are greeted into a welcoming environment. Take the lead role on parent inquiries and/or concerns
- Provide leadership and mentorship to Leaders in Training summer participants along with the completion of their weekly evaluations
- Main point of contact for the Child & Youth Programming team
Skills & Qualifications
- Positive and professional attitude with strong communication skills working with diverse groups of individuals including participants, parents/guardians, programming team and facility staff
- Proven time management skills and problem-solving skills
- Provide outstanding customer service to camp participants and parents/guardians
- Ability to adapt to changing work environments and demands
- Ability to deal with a variety of participant needs and adapt plans appropriately
- Effective planning & project execution
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and in a variety of work environments with a team focused approach
- A high school diploma and enrolled in a post-secondary institution for recreation, physical education, education and/or related degree is preferred
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C
- High Five – Principles of Healthy Child Development (must be obtained prior to camps starting)
- Sport specific coaching and/or instructing experience is highly desired
- Experience working with children and youth between the ages of 5Y-17Y
- Ability to maintain high standards of safety, quality and cooperation
- National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) is an asset
Conditions of Employment
- Submission of current First Aid, CPR (level C) certification
- Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check
