Job Description

Are you an enthusiastic and driven mechanic looking for the perfect opportunity? Join our Fleet and Facility Management team as a Heavy Duty Mechanic (Fleet Services Technician) and take advantage of the chance to be home with your loved ones every night.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Utilize standard knowledge, skills, and best practices of the Heavy-Duty Mechanic/Heavy Equipment Technician trade
  • Conduct comprehensive maintenance, servicing, and repair of vehicles and equipment used across Strathcona County operations
  • Work autonomously, demonstrating the ability to perform tasks independently with minimal supervision
  • Maintain accurate and detailed documentation upon completing repairs on vehicles, equipment, and buses.
  • Adhere to assigned time standards, ensuring the timely completion of all tasks and responsibilities


Qualifications and Skills:


  • Licensed Journeyperson Heavy Duty On-Road and Off-Road Mechanic/Heavy Equipment Technician is preferred or registered apprentice may be considered
    • Consideration may be given to those candidates that possess only their On-Road or Off-Road Journeyperson Certificate
    • Licensed Red Seal would be considered an asset
  • Experience working on Transit buses (Nova, Alexander Denis, and New Flyer). Coach experience is also beneficial
  • Experience working on various types of on-road and off-road equipment including: 
    • 160M graders
    • 950 GC loaders
    • Track hoes 
    • All types of fire apparatus and support vehicles 
    • Snow and ice sanding trucks
    • Tool Cats
    • Vac Tucks 
    • Ice resurfaces
    • Track Hoes
  • Basic computer experience 
  • Thorough knowledge and experience of equipment repair practices, procedures and preventative maintenance requirements 
  • Knowledge of current electronic diagnostic programs for chassis and body systems 
  • Ability to work with a large group and train apprentices with limited supervision 
  • Knowledge and experience with working in a Fleet Management Program 
  • Automotive experience would be considered an asset 


Conditions of Employment:


  • Submission of a Satisfactory Criminal Record Check 
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits  
    • Valid Class 3 Driver’s License with Q endorsement is preferred
  • Ability to perform physical labour as part of the job duties and stand/walk for extended periods of time 
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts and overtime may be required 
  • Ability to be on-call (1 week per rotation) 
  • Ability to achieve Provincial Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) status
