Job Description

The GIS Analyst I is responsible for supporting the management and maintenance of Strathcona County’s Geographic Information System (GIS). This role focuses on providing timely and customer-focused GIS services to County departments, staff, citizens, and businesses. 


Key responsibilities include routine data updates, troubleshooting GIS issues, and offering daily operational support. The GIS Analyst I also works with department users to deploy basic GIS functionalities and assists in enhancing the enterprise GIS system. Success in this position requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to continuous learning and innovation in GIS technology.


 


Key Responsibilities:


  • Responsible for completing timely and customer-focused technology services and support to County departments, staff, citizens, and businesses
  • Work with client departments to maximize the County’s investment in technology, preparing & maintaining documentation, troubleshooting, and support
  • Successfully complete operational tasks and fulfill service requests, including data updates, data requests, and mapping & analysis requests
  • Coordinate with clients, stakeholders, and project teams to ensure deliverable requirements and timelines are successfully completed
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of standards and provide technical input on technology related issues
  • Research, learn, and adapt new technologies and relevant industry standards and best practices
  • Perform spatial analyses to identify patterns, trends, and relationships in geographical data. Utilize GIS software to create maps, charts, and other visual representations that effectively communicate spatial information
  • Collect, handle, and maintain geospatial data from various sources. Ensure data accuracy and adherence to County standards through meticulous data editing and quality control processes. Perform data cleaning and transformation to ensure proper formatting and integration into the GIS system. Regularly update and maintain GIS databases to support ongoing projects and operational needs
  • Support the implementation of GIS projects by participating as a project resource and fulfilling assigned tasks


 


Qualifications and Skills:


  • Diploma or Degree in GIS or Geography or other related discipline, with a minimum of 1 year of directly related GIS experience 
  • Strong knowledge of the principles and practices of GIS, spatial analysis and cartography
  • Proficient user of Enterprise GIS Suite of tools including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, and ArcGIS Online, FME Form and Flow, VertiGIS Platform
  • Working knowledge of MS SQL Server, MS Office Productivity tools, MS Project and MS Visio
  • Training or exposure to Web Development tools such as Python and/or Arcade would be considered an asset
  • GISP Certification or ESRI Certification considered an asset
  • ITIL Foundation Certification would be considered an asset
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with strong presentation and customer service skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff with a varying degree of systems understanding is required
  • Advanced ability to build and maintain relationships, communicate and collaborate with stakeholders, find common ground, communicate progress and risks, and help others thrive in a continually changing environment
