The Millennium Place Aquatic Centre revitalization will take place from April 2020 to early January 2021.

*Note: The project has an increased timeframe to ensure the safety of our contractors and staff while we adhere to Covid-19 social distancing guidelines from Alberta Health Services.

The aquatic centre revitalization includes the following core components:

• Replacement of the aquatic play structure with a new play structure and interactive features
• Replacement of sound baffles and installation of new acoustic treatments
• Replacement of the pool filters/filtration system
• Full ceiling re-paint
• Removal of chlorine gas as part of the water treatment system
• Pool boiler replacement

This planned revitalization and replacement of parts is part of Strathcona County’s commitment to providing high quality services and experiences to our residents.

For both projects, the work addresses important upgrades as part of facility equipment lifecycle projects. This includes work that will upgrade the aquatic centre water treatment and boiler systems to the most recent and highest standards.

This work will support increased safety and operating efficiency, while other projects like replacing sound baffles and a new play structure will support enhanced guest experiences.

Millennium Place is approaching 20 years old, and certain mechanical systems in facilities require upgrades or replacements as part of their lifecycle.

The scope of the 2020 work takes into consideration major replacement projects that were set to occur over the next 2-3 years.

Given the timing of these projects, the most efficient way of achieving upgrades and replacements was to consolidate these projects to be completed in one extended shutdown as part of a revitalization in 2020.

This will save construction time and long-term project costs, in addition to negating further periods of consecutive extended shutdowns in future years (which would impact users on a greater scale).

The following aquatic guests will be impacted by the extended pool closure:

• Regular spontaneous use pool users (e.g. lap swimmers, guests of the wave pool, hot-tub, sauna, etc., groups looking to visit the pool as part of a group visit)
• Drop-in/registered aquatic fitness programs that typically utilize the pool for classes
• Community groups using the space for bookings

Drop-in aquatic centre users at Millennium Place will be encouraged to utilize Emerald Hills Leisure Centre and Kinsmen Leisure Centre. Learn more about booking your activity time slot for swimming.

For community user groups, aquatic fitness programs and other stakeholders, service modifications and re-locations will occur. County staff will work with stakeholders to balance service impacts across groups and stakeholders.

It is anticipated that Emerald Hills Leisure Centre and Kinsmen Leisure Centre will experience higher demand for aquatic services from September to January.

A coordinated approach across facilities will occur to best meet the higher demand during this shutdown.
