When using recreational fire or backyard fire pit, it’s essential to prioritize safety. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, please follow these guidelines:

Safe recreational fire guidelines:

  • Confined structure: A recreational fire must be completely contained within a non-combustible structure or container.
  • Screen: Make sure it is covered with a heavy gauge metal screen, with mesh no larger than 13 mm.
  • Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation to prevent the escape of combustible materials, including ash.
  • Distance: Keep the fire pit at least three meters (10 feet) away from any combustible materials like fences, houses, garages, decks, or trees.
  • Appropriate fuel: Only use clean, dry wood as fuel. Never burn garbage, leaves, straw or any prohibited materials.
  • Smoke: As fires can produce smoke, please be considerate of your neighbours and surrounding residents.
  • Permits and restrictions: Recreational fires meeting the above criteria do not require a permit. However, they are not allowed during fire bans. Learn about which fires require a fire permit.

  • Proper disposal: , lumber and bulky waste properly. Do not burn them.
  • Maintain landscaping: Mow and water the grass around your home.
  • Deck protection: Enclose combustible decks with non-combustible materials.
  • Supervise fires: Always keep a close watch on fire pits while in use and ensure they are safe.
