The Accessible Parking Project improves access to outdoor public spaces for people with mobility issues and mobility aids, such as walkers and wheelchairs.

This project supports the County’s strategic priority of creating a diverse, welcome, inclusive and accessible community for all.

Stalls will be designated or constructed

This multi-year project will add accessible parking stalls next to parks, playgrounds and trail access points throughout Sherwood Park.

An accessible parking stall includes designated access with a sign and a concrete ramp connection to an adjacent trail or sidewalk. Some locations only require a sign, as the ramp connection is already built; others will need to be constructed.

Twenty locations will be designated or constructed in 2024; future locations will be confirmed before each construction season.

Potential locations reviewed and prioritized

At the request of Council, the County reviewed access points to parks and trails in Sherwood Park and developed selection criteria to prioritize locations. The selection criteria and overall project plan was presented to the County’s Accessibility Advisory Committee for feedback.

Preference was given to locations with the most potential for regular use and without any other accessibility concerns, including steep slopes or unpaved areas. Some locations are not suitable based on traffic congestion or any underground utility or infrastructure conflicts, such as gas lines.

Additional spaces will be built in 2025 and 2026 based on funding and in alignment with other construction projects.

If you would like to inquire about a potential location, please contact us through County Connect.
