2024 Construction season survey
We’re looking for feedback on how we communicate about construction in the community.
Provide input on projects that impacted you in 2024. Survey closes November 24.
From June 2023 until the fall of 2026, the County will be improving accessibility for transit riders by building concrete bus pads at various bus stop locations in Sherwood Park.

The project
Nearly 200 bus stops will be updated to a smooth concrete pad. This year's construction is estimated to begin in early to mid-May.
- Locations will be determined annually
- Once start dates are confirmed, signs will be posted at stops scheduled for construction that year
- Construction will happen between May to October
- Construction will likely take one week per stop
- The plan is to renovate between 40 to 50 stops per year
Parking may be affected during construction.
Impacts to Transit customers
Shelters and benches will be temporarily removed from these construction zones. They will be replaced once construction is complete.
When catching a bus at an affected stop, please stand where the bus can see you as it approaches. Wave at the Operator when the bus approaches. This indicates helps the operator know you want to hop-on.
Impacts to property owners
The County will do its best to avoid impacting individual properties, wherever possible.
- Property owners directly impacted by stop construction will be contacted by Transit to discuss the plans.
- Homeowners affected by construction in their area will receive a notice letter before work starts.
Project goal
The main reason for this project is to improve access to transit. Accessible stops are important to a thriving and safe transit system for all users. To be truly accessible, bus pads must:
- Be visible
- Have adequate and barrier free access to the curb
- Provide space for users to share the area, such as allowing cyclists and pedestrians to pass
Some bus stops already meet appropriate standards. Many do not, with only a pole in the ground or a sign attached to a streetlamp or utility pole.
Funding
Strathcona County is appreciative of the federal Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) funding to assist with the important work to provide accessible bus stops.
