Strathcona County provides 9-1-1 coverage for regional partners during outage

CrowdStrike, a global cybersecurity firm, issued a software update to numerous client systems on July 19, leading to service outages and other impacts around the world. The impacts extended to 9-1-1 call centres across Alberta, though Strathcona County’s emergency response systems were not affected.

County residents were able to access emergency services as usual. Additionally, Strathcona County was able to take emergency 9-1-1 calls through its Emergency Communications Centre on behalf of the impacted municipalities.

“Strathcona County provided emergency 9-1-1 call answer coverage for some of our regional partners as we have processes in place to ensure continuity of emergency services in case one or numerous municipal partners are impacted by outages,” notes Mayor Rod Frank. “This system continues to work as intended, ensuring that our collaborative emergency services efforts will keep people across the province safe. This time, Strathcona County was able to aid where necessary – next time, another municipality will do so for us.”

Strathcona County does not use CrowdStrike’s services and was not affected by resultant impacts. A regional 9-1-1 call partnership among municipalities will continue to ensure that Albertans across the province remain safe if their local 9-1-1 centre is down.

Strathcona County is currently not providing support to its partners for 9-1-1 call reception as their operations have returned to normal following the impacts.
